Crown Wallpaper and Wallcoverings

Crown Wallcoverings date from 1839, and are well known for their huge range of stylish beautiful wallpaper designs.  With exciting modern and elegant contemporary styles as well as traditional classic patterns, you’ll soon find there’s a perfect Crown wallpaper for every room in your home.

Established by Charles Potter in 1839, he adapted a fabric printing machine to accept paper and begun production in Belgrave Mill of Darwen, Blackburn. By 1851 Potter and his brother Harold were exhibiting their wallpapers and gained distinctions at the London Great Exhibition 1851 and gold medals in the 1867 Universal Exhibition Paris.

The next generation continued the Potters success with John Gerald following in his fathers trade, beginning to diversify the use of wallcoverings in the home the Potters begun to experiment in hygienic and washable wallpapers to promote hygiene at home.

By 1899 the Potters wallpaper company had been incorporated into a new company which amalgamated other wallpaper companies and the lead brand name became Crown at this time. When war was declared in 1914 the wallcovering mills were adapted to aid the country produce munitions, once peace was declared the mills returned to wallpaper production but tragically Belgrave mill suffered a massive fire in 1920 but thanks to the local fire brigade the mill was saved.

When the 1950's came along the country was beginning to love DIY and home improvement and Crowns advertising contributed to this, moving into the 1960's with demand growing Crown entered the high street. During the 1970's and beyong Crown become a worldwide exporter with its roots still firmly in the north as they are today.

In 2014 Crown became the lead brand under CWV Wallcoverings Ltd.
