Why was wallpaper so elaborate?
Mass production techniques were developed and the wallpaper tax, which was introduced during the reign of Queen Anne in 1712, was finally repealed in 1836. This meant that wallpaper became more accessible to more and more householders.
Designs started to vary, costs were multifaceted and the wallpaper industry was pioneered thanks to an English textile designer called William Morris. The artist became one of the most influential designers of wallpaper and fabrics during the Victorian period and was a major contributor to the revival of traditional textile arts in Britain.
His magnificent designs included embellished patterns and colours and you can replicate the same look with our help.
